Blues and jazz fest

The first ever Blues and Jazz Festival, a vision of the late Larry Terry, a popular administrator at The University of Texas at Dallas, is scheduled for Friday and Saturday, Jan. 26 and 27, at the school's Richardson campus.
The event will include a concert by famed saxophone player Leroy “Hog” Cooper, a theatrical performance, lectures and a panel discussion.
All proceeds will be donated to the Larry D. Terry Emerging Leaders Scholarship Endowment. Larry Terry, whose father was noted jazz and blues songwriter and guitarist Verbie Gene “Flash” Terry, was vice president of business affairs when he died in June.
Tickets are $20 for a Friday lecture and concert, $25 for a Saturday lecture and concert, and $40 for both events. Tickets are $5 per event for UTD students.
Ticket office hours for advance purchase are from 2 to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
For more information, visit http://ah.utdallas.edu/season0607/terryjazzfest.htm.

The UT Dallas festival will begin 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 26, in the university’s Conference Center. Dan Morgenstern, who has worked in the jazz field for nearly 50 years and has received six Grammy Awards in Best Album Notes category, will discuss jazz in the Southwest.
Following the lecture, Leroy “Hog” Cooper will give a Ray Charles tribute concert. Cooper is a baritone sax player and Dallas native who has performed and recorded with a range of artists, including David “Fathead” Newman, Hank Crawford and Ray Charles. He was a member of the Ray Charles Band from 1957-76.
Morgenstern, Paul Oliver, Alan Govenar and Akin Babatunde will take part in a free panel discussion at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 27, in Jonsson Performance Hall.
Paul Oliver, a professor at the University of Oxford in England, will give a lecture at 7 p.m. Jan. 27 about pre-war African American vernacular music.
The festival will close at 8 p.m. with a theatrical performance, “Blind Lemon Blues”, in the University Theatre. The show pays homage to Blind Lemon Jefferson, who emerged in the 1920s as the biggest selling country blues singer in America.
