Plano East High School jazz ensemble will perform three sets of jazz music at the fourth annual Mardi Gras and jazz band event from 7 to 10 p.m. Saturday in the Plano East cafeteria, 3000 Los Rios in Plano.
The event includes a silent auction, food, dancing and casino-style games. Authentic, homemade Cajun cuisine will be available for purchase as well as other food items. Cost is $5 at the door.

Sandy Blair will present “I Dinna Ken: How to successfully incorporate dialect into manuscripts” at the 9:30 a.m. Saturday Dallas Area Romance Authors meeting at the Holiday Inn Select, 1655 N. Central Expressway. Visitors pay $5 at the door.

Parenting skills winter classes will be held at Family Outreach of Richardson/Plano, 2205 Los Rios Blvd. in Plano.
The courses use the book Systematic Training for Effective Parenting. For seven sessions, there is a $20 individual charge or $35 per couple. Study books cost $15.
The early childhood class is Sunday, Jan. 28. School-age children will be Thursday, Feb. 22. The teenage course is Wednesday, Feb. 21.

Brentfield Elementary PTA will host a live and silent auction from 7 to 11 p.m. Saturday at the Mustang Café and Bar in The Shops at Willowbend, 6121 W. Park Blvd., Plano.
Tickets are $40 in advance and $50 at the door. Proceeds support the Brentfield outdoor learning center.
