Chris Van Allsburg’s The Polar Express pulled into White Rock Coffee recently. And on the tracks right behind were Currier and Ives’ American Express Train and Monet’s Gare St. Lazare.
While these actual works weren’t displayed on the coffee shop walls, the artists and their visions of trains were the inspiration used by Lake Highlands Elementary first-graders for their White Rock Coffee student art opening, "Trains", writes correspondent J.J. Pair in the Feb. 10 edition of Richardson Neighbors.
The exhibit at White Rock Coffee is back for its second year by popular demand with a whole new group of first-graders.
The train artwork will be on display until early March at the coffee shop, 10105 E. Northwest Highway.

First-grader Jose Sarmiento creates his train artwork.
The event welcomed a stream of art viewers to the coffee shop.
Since the 2005-06 school year, White Rock Coffee owners Nancy and Bob Baker have hosted these elementary art openings that feature a new class and theme every six to eight weeks. Pieces are displayed on an aluminum wall next to the roaster and on the facia above the counter.
Art teacher Amelia Natanson makes sure posters displayed at each show detail the theme, the methods used by the kids and a bit of history on the artist or artistic venue inspiring the show.
For Trains, Natanson wanted to teach her students about movement, rhythm and pattern, highlighting the repetition of shapes. Using Van Allsburg, Currier and Ives and Monet as examples, she first had the students compose their pieces.
They arranged shapes such as windows, tracks, cars and mountains to create their own patterns. The first-graders then drew their trains in a setting using crayons and black permanent markers. To finish their pieces, Natanson guided the kids through the process of crayon resist by adding watercolor or wash for additional texture.
JJ Pair is a Lake Highlands Elementary spokeswoman and regular Neighbors contributor.
