Showing their smarts

J.J. Pearce High School's academic decathlon team placed third at the 2007 Texas state meet for small and medium schools held February 23-24 in San Antonio.
A total of 40 schools in 2A, 3A and 4A from all across Texas competed in the event.
By earning the bronze medal, each of the team members, Parker Staats, Michael Mohkamkar, Ellie Janco, Elsa Lee, Ian Campbell, William F. "Ty" Krause, Lauren Morzak, Meredith Corley and James Issac, will receive a $500 college scholarship.
Several students also distinguished themselves with individual medals, including Krause, Issac and Staats who placed second, third and fifth overall, respectively, in their brackets to earn additional scholarships.
Academic Decathlon is a rigorous set of tests on math, science and social studies, along with an interview and prepared speech given before judges for both team and individual scoring. This year's area of special topical interest was China.
