Madeline Peterson of Lake Highlands, a sophomore at Richardson High school has headed off to Costa Rica to spend seven days helping Earthwatch investigators research the effects of human on howler and capuchin monkey behavior.
Peterson, who is accompanying principal researchers Tracie McKinney and Dr. W. Scott of Ohio State University, was sponsored by a generous grant from Jane K. and John P. Wilson Fellowship Program.
She got additional funds for equipment and spending from relatives as birthday gifts.
Peterson, daughter of Jamie and Gretchen Peterson, was “a bit nervous” because this will be her first time out of the United States without her family, but is very excited because she is fascinated by animals in general and monkeys in particular.
Peterson’s RHS chemistry teacher, Jennifer Anderson, also was scheduled to go on the trip, having learned of the project when the student asked for a letter of recommendation during winter break.
